Smoking is related to all sort of illness, and gum infection or gum disease is just one of them. (...)

Smoking is related to all sort of illness, and gum infection or gum disease is just one of them. A number of studies had been conducted regarding on the evidence of smoking and its connection to gum infection and gum disease. Nicotine and smoke from tobacco can cause the blood vessels to be constricted reducing the oxygen and nutrients distributed to gum tissues. Smoking also reduces the ability of the body to fight infection and smokers are more susceptible to harmful bacteria that cause gum infection and bad breath. Smokers are at a higher risk of bad breath and gum infection than of non smokers. Tooth loss may be an eventual result if of persistent bad breath and gum infection due to smoking.

Gum and bone destruction and loss can occur due to plaque and tartar formation from smoking for the toxins and chemicals in tobacco weakens the immune systems and prevents the production of antibodies. Antibodies is our body’s natural defense against bacterial and other disease- causing factors. Weak immune system is susceptible with infection.
